Feadship | 1978 (2025)

Calypso is a custom-built Feadship with a seductive mix of classic yachting and 21st-century craftsmanship. Designed by De Voogt and launched in 1978, she embodies the elegance of a bygone era, sustained through decades of careful refit and ownership that have preserved her place among the finest restored heritage Feadships afloat.Commissioned originally by automotive magnate E. Clayton Gengras as Claybeth and later owned by Malcolm Forbes—who famously hosted royalty and Hollywood icons on board—Calypso has lived many distinguished lives. From Forbes’s high-profile soirées to her later partnership with National Geographic on scientific expeditions, few yachts possess such a storied past.Fresh from a multi-million-dollar, 12-month refit completed in 2025, Calypso stands as a testament to her enduring Dutch pedigree and succession of private stewardship.Malcolm Forbes’s legendary gatherings once animated Calypso’s decks; today, that spirit of conviviality lives on. The upper deck remains the social heart of the yacht, complete with a new Jacuzzi, sun loungers, a twelve-seat al fresco dining table, and a 120-inch cinema screen. Day or night, the deck’s open design draws guests outward, from cocktails at sunset to dinners that stretch into the late hours.A redesigned bar now wraps the mast with solid-stone counters, complemented by fresh teak decking, a stainless-stell grill and flexible sunshades. Discreet treadmill storage and twin cranes complete the arrangement. On the main deck aft, a protected cockpit offers a second dining area, comfortably shaded and well sheltered for use underway or at anchor. While her De Voogt lines remain untouched, her hull now gleams in Flag Blue, giving Calypso a fresh distinction while preserving her classic profile.Calypso’s interior exudes warmth and charm with rich teak panelling and a feeling of understated elegance. The main salon flows naturally into a dining area, creating a single, open space illuminated by large windows.Original woodwork has been carefully restored, furnishings refreshed, and subtle updates in lighting, textiles, and finishes have given the spaces a lighter, more contemporary edge. A custom live-edge dining table and bespoke seating introduce modern comfort while preserving the yacht’s traditional character. Forward, an owner’s study can double as a cinema, gym, or additional cabin.Calypso accommodates 11 guests in five en suite cabins, with an optional sixth single cabin currently used as crew quarters. Her arrangement includes a full beam master and VIP suite, two queen cabins, and a twin with a Pullman berth. All cabins have been refreshed with new carpets and soft goods, complemented by new overheads, polished and resealed stonework, and re-veneered wood throughout.Calypso’s latest 2024/25 refit represents the culmination of a decade-long program of renewal following major works in 2016 and 2019. This most recent, multi-million-dollar refit encompassed a complete renewal of her structure, systems, and finish. From her hull plating and superstructure fairing to her mechanical and hotel systems, every element was rebuilt or replaced. The hull was completely re-faired and repainted, with new transom doors. In the engine room, both Caterpillar mains were fully serviced with rebuilt turbos, balanced shafts, and reconditioned exhausts, supported by overhauled generators and new water heating, water making, and fresh-water systems. An entirely new chiller plant and air-conditioning system were also installed, while every bilge, tank, and technical space was cleaned, pressure-tested, and repainted. The result is a yacht that feels mechanically new beneath her classic form.
